Everything about this house was perfect when the owner bought it, except that it wasn’t. The stair was winding and narrow, and the interior floorplan could not easily accommodate its relocation. The front elevation needed a refresh, but since the house fell within a historical district, we had to review every new window and door substitution. The half-level stair to the mezzanine needed a more gracious feel. The breakfast room was dark and disconnected from the outdoor patio.

The design solutions were many:

Provide a new curved stair and decorative railing to the mezzanine level. Open the breakfast room completely to the exterior patio with a wall of sliding glass doors and insert a new steel beam to support the roof. Provide a two-story elevator at the rear of the house to access the second floor. Redesign and update all the bathrooms. Re-stucco the walls and install all new windows and doors matching the original style.
